Overview:
I'm passionate about sharing my love of music with students. I've been teaching privately for over ten years now, and am at home teaching students of all ages. Through music, I've had the opportunity to play in many different states, as well as overseas. I am eclectic in my musical experiences, as I am at home teaching classical, jazz, and other styles. One of the great experiences of my life was being able to travel to England to perform in the 2014 London New Year's Day festivities. Additionally, I treasure the time spent performing with the University of South Carolina Marching Band in my college years.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching privately in college in 2000. Since then I have maintained a studio of students in my home and in their homes. I believe focused, goal-specific practice sessions are key to developing a love for music and one's on instrument. Many of my students have earned superiors at state festivals and have won music scholarships to various schools. I strive to have each student develop individual goals for themselves and their musical experiences; whether it be simply getting better for the love of playing, or striving to perfect their skills to excel at various auditions.
METHODS USED
For beginning brass players, my favorite method for individual instruction in the "Breeze Easy" method, by John Kinyon. These books have fun and engaging entry-level pieces for students to play. Once students have gone through each book and developed certain fundamental skills, I will encourage them to move on to more advanced books such as the Arban's "Complete Method", and Robert Getchell's "2nd Book of Practical Studies". Arban's has a great combination of fundamental exercises such as scale studies and vocalizes, but also has entertaining solos and duets toward the back of the book. I strive to keep lessons engaging and fun by asking directed questions, modeling each piece of music myself, and providing interesting biographical or historical information about composers.
LESSON STYLE
As a teacher, I strive to be encouraging, yet work to challenge each of my students to become their best. Students have different goals, and I strive to help them achieve those goals in the best way possible. I love the art of teaching and I constantly try and read new literature about methods and materials. One of the most effective techniques I have utilized is the "Demonstrate, Say and Play" method. I demonstrate a concept or piece on my own instrument, then have the student say/sing out loud the music while employing correct fingerings; finally the student plays the piece. This technique for learning new music has been very effective in my teaching.

David has done a great job working with me as an older musician. He has provided a lot of guidance related to enhancing my horn to make it more accurate and efficient to play. He has provided helpful hints about my attack, breathing, range extension, etc. He is a patient teacher.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
