I began teaching my first piano student when I was 14 years old. I have since enjoyed teaching in many different ways. I've taught private students, homeschool choruses, pre-K-8th grade (using music curriculum that I created), 8th grade science students, large choirs of beautiful angelic children's voices, adult church choirs, youth and adult bands, gospel choirs, reading literacy students,and soldier medicshow to prepare for their responsibilities. With each new student, I assess their abilities and goals. From this information, I will make a decision reagrding which method I will use to teach the students their instrument. As lessons progress, the curriculum becomes more challenging. Depending on each students abilities and goals, I will most likely one of the following methods: Faber, Alfred, John Thompson, or Suzuki. In addition to teaching students how to play their instrument, each of these methods include supplemental theory materials, helping students to understand the language of music, which helps them become even better musicians. In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music.
