Every student progresses at their own pace. I write out the homework for the week on a piece of paper for both them and the parent to see. For beginning students, we typically begin with Essential Elements while discovering fundamentals of the instrument and getting a handle on reading bass clef and rhythms. This of course varies on a student's previous experience or comfort with reading music. We progress from there into appropriate etudes that can be quite melodic and entertaining to practice and then beginning solo repertoire, and advance from there. I always encourage students to have a goal piece in mind that they would like to play, especially my adult students, so we can frame our goals around that and set up a plan of action as we move forward. I found it totally inadequate. It did not teach you how to deal with your student or their parents.
