Instruments: Voice

My teaching experience began when I was in grad school, where I taught a few students at a local high school. Since moving to the KC area eight years ago, I have been consistently teaching and gradually building my private studio, which now has over 20 students! I love working with young singers (specifically grades 8-12) and helping them find the potential in their voices.  I have encountered the full range of ability levels, from very experienced (had lessons before, sung multiple solos in school choir, had lead roles in musicals, etc.) to complete novice (no lessons, no choir experience).  My overall approach to lessons is the same, regardless of ability level: consistent improvement from week to week using vocal exercises, songs, and an exploration of breath and the physicality of singing. I am a creative, goal-centered and insightful instructor who has spent many years dedicating her life to excellence in music. My primary instrument is piano. I'm an exceptionally gifted sight-reader and love to pass on some of those skills to my students. While I specialize in accompaniment, I've given some lessons for a variety of other instruments as well. I graduated in April 2018 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy from Illinois State University. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Bass Guitar

Fundamentals remain the same at every level of expertise, and every age: whether we're referring to low breath support in singing, high wrist position at the piano, or how to use both amp tweaking and finger technique together to minimize 'clicking' in the bass guitar sound. These and all fundamentals which make up the foundation of any instrumental expression of music (including the voice, and especially the voice) do not change. Read More

Instruments: Voice

For beginning students, I like to start by assessing the students' skill by having them sing a piece of music of their choice. I am a strong believer in students taking charge of their learning, so I like to have my students choose a piece of music of their choice, and I will pick another piece of music that I believe suits their voice. Each lesson will start with breathing techniques and a vocal warm up. Read More

Instruments: Violin Viola

While there are certain etudes that I give to many of my students such as Schradieck, Sevcik, Kreutzer, Rode, and Dont, I do not go by any particular violin "method" in my lessons. Rather, my lessons are catered to each student's individual differences and characteristics. Every student has his/her strength and weakness, and they are not always the same among the students. I carefully look at what needs most attention on each student, and come up with the best approach that I could think of based on my knowledge and experience as a violinist and teacher, so the student can overcome the difficulty in the most efficient manner. Instruments: Guitar Ukulele Electric Guitar Acoustic Guitar

I thanked God for the gift he had given me and had no idea what to do except promise him to always use the gift for good and not for anything bad. An incredible feeling swept over me. I didn't have the words to explain it at the time other than it was a Jesus thing. I worked hard, got married, had children, and played the guitar and wrote songs in every available moment. Instruments: Trumpet

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
No distractions! If you want to get the most out of your practice, you need to be serious when you practice. No messing around on your phone during "Chop breaks". Stay focused and encouraged to play better all of the time! Crave progress! It is difficult to step back and analyze our own progress sometimes. Practicing over and over without ever realizing the effects it has on your sound and performance ability, can be mentally and physically draining. Be honest with yourself and ask, "Is this better than it was last week?" "Do my parents/friends/fans hear my progress?" THE ANSWER IS YES!! Stay motivated, focused, and determined to be the best!!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Does your child have the physical capability to press the buttons/keys/pads? If so, then they are ready! ****Filler TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller TextFiller Text****

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
"Because it only had 3 buttons and that meant it was easy" Little did I know, I was verrrry wrong. Since I have realized how difficult the trumpet is, I have learned to crave that difficulty. There is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling than working so hard on developing a certain skill on the trumpet just to see it finally pay off in a performance. In addition, trumpet is such a versatile instrument. You can play so many different genres of music and tailor your tone and sound and articulations to any genre or style and enjoy ALL of them!

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
RANGE! Expanding ones range on the trumpet is vital to their mastery of the instrument yet it is incredibly difficult to be able to play very high AND very low within the same piece and be able to control the instrument and those notes every step of the way. In my experience, many trumpeters are EITHER incredible lower register players or incredible higher register players. It is very rare that I meet/play with a trumpeter who has mastered the highs and the lows because it is NOT easy. It takes serious discipline and knowledge of how the instrument works.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I majored in Music Business Management. I loved it. I love music and I want to be more involved in the industry as a businessman rather than a performer. I want to have more influence on the future of the industry and how it functions to support great music and its creators. I am currently making the most out of my degree by helping artists connect with industry professionals such as booking agents/managers/publishers/label reps, etc... I really enjoy the "behind the scenes" work of a business professional.
