I adjust my teaching style to compliment each student individually. My goal is for each student to enjoy playing their instrument, but I believe that the personal improvement of each student is vital for their continued interest and passion. I take it upon myself to make sure that my teaching is resulting in personal enjoyment and improvement! I also believe that studying a musical instrument is useful for developing things like problem solving skills, perseverance, building good habits, having a good work ethic, and being responsible. Effective teaching caters to each student's unique needs and learning styles. This is why although I prefer the Music Tree series of method books, I'm also flexible and observant to determine the best possible approach on a student-by-student basis. My goal is to instill a genuine, passion for music in my students, and also to help develop well-rounded musicians. Whether you want to play Mozart, write songs, or play in a jazz band, I want to give you the tools you need to make the most of that situation. Read More

I have studied many teaching methods, including Orff, Suzuki, the Russian music school. Essential to the Russian music school of piano method are touch, tone and expressiveness. When playing piano, posture, hand position and other fundamentals are very important. I use elements of all of these methods, tailored to the needs and abilities of my individual students. In vocal lessons, my method is based on breath control and learning to sing a musical piece the way the composer intended, emotionally and expressively. Read More

When I first started teaching in college I used standardized materials and found it was helpful but inadequate to teach everything my students needed. So I began to explore other curriculum and attend the NAMM conventions and talk with other instructors. I saw there was a need for more expanded materials and started writing my own. I now have two complete text books with copyrights along with practice recordings that I make available to my students. Read More

My approach to coaching students is focused on 5 important areas; embouchure, tone quality, intonation (pitch), technique, and time. Memorization of key signatures and scales are very important to the student's overall success. I utilize a method for memorizing key signatures which will decrease the memorization time and increaseretention. The choice of music books and etude studies are based upon the student's level of playing and areas I identify needing improvement. Read More

I enjoy using popular method books designed to help develop technique at the student's specific level. I also particularly enjoy creating my own exercises that may be more beneficial to a student's specific technique development. Being a bass/rhythm guitarist, I place a lot of value on tempo and rhythm accuracy, and other key elements to being able to play successfully with others. I believe technique development to be of vital importance and approach it on a student by student basis - no two students have exactly the same lesson plan! Read More
