With my beginning students, I would start them off with a method book that would teach them the basic fundamentals of playing the drum set. I have many books, and I recommend certain books based on what the student wants to learn. Once they master the fundamentals, I would introduce them to solos and charts for performance practice. I also had the opportunity to perform with a small jazz combo and a large big band on a number of occasions, as well as singing with a mixed a capella ensemble in which I sang many of todays popular songs rearranged for acapella vocal ensembles. If the student is not in middle school yet, then they will most likely start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress, more material will be added later. For intermediate students, I would begin to add solo repertoire and would most likely also add the Clarke Characteristic Studies.
