In my second book I devote most of the curriculum to teaching the concepts of chord theory with movable chord patterns and learning to play scales over chords for improvisation. Therefore my students get a thorough knowledge of reading and playing notes, chord theory concepts and positional guitar playing through movable CAGED system in positional playing in various styles. The method book I begin younger students on is Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber. There are 5 Level books to complete. We use the lesson book, as well as the technique book. I also supplement with solo repertoire and various materials. For the older beginner, I use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course, as well as supplemental solo repertoire. So, while the overall structure of my lessons is going to be the same for everyone, it is vital that I set realistic goals for each student based on their own experience and individuality. We'll usually start with the First Book of [Voice Part]'s Solos and mix in one or two musical theater pieces.
