For beginning students, children and adults, I start out with my own material that I have created over the past five years. I use it to start technique, note reading, and rhythm. Once the student completes the material, I move them to Suzuki books, etudes, and other pieces. I like to get student input when choosing music. I believe that the student will be more engaged in the lessons and practice when they are playing something that they enjoy. Read More

Hey there, I'm Sky! I play a lot of instruments, compose scores for TV and games, make beats, produce other people's stuff - if music is involved, I tend to be involved. I've studied with a number of phenomenal teachers in the classical, jazz, and eclectic performance and producing world and my students regularly excel in competitions, ensembles, auditions, and creating/producing their own music! Somewhere along the line, it became obvious that my life is only complete when Im making music. Read More

When I really take a deep look at what is happening when I teach, I realize that in the end the student is teaching him/herself. I'm merely responding to a musical moment -- with a set of ears that I trust, and that happen to be attached to my body -- in a way that makes sense to the vast musical experience I have. "How can this be more beautiful?" "How can this be more secure?" "How can I say a thing to the student that clicks in her/his mind, such that they figure out for themselves how to make this more beautiful/secure/free/awesome/spine-tingling. Read More

When I first started teaching in college I used standardized materials and found it was helpful but inadequate to teach everything my students needed. So I began to explore other curriculum and attend the NAMM conventions and talk with other instructors. I saw there was a need for more expanded materials and started writing my own. I now have two complete text books with copyrights along with practice recordings that I make available to my students. Read More

During lessons, I typically focus on a balance of instrumental technique and music reading. However, Im flexible and happy to adapt to each student's preferences. If a student prefers to prioritize one skill over the other, I will gladly tailor lessons to match their goals. Additionally, we work on developing and applying effective practice strategies to ensure steady progress. Since every student progresses at different rates and excels in different areas, I adapt my teaching style to meet their unique needs. Read More

Make music with friends. Play for your family. Be the person who brings a guitar to a campfire. You don't have to play like Wille Nelson to take a guitar to a campfire! Have fun. Make music. Playing the guitar is a very simple thing to do. That is why it is so extremely popular. There are two types of people: those who play the guitar and those who wish they played the guitar. Read More

For the beginner voice student who is young, I teach breath control and ear training through solfege. For adults, I take an assessment of what they want to learn and the goals they want to achieve musically. What I've found is in a lot of cases, adults want to learn how to sing a certain song, fix a pressing issue with their voice, or they just want to discover the joy of developing their ability to play.
