When I really take a deep look at what is happening when I teach, I realize that in the end the student is teaching him/herself. I'm merely responding to a musical moment -- with a set of ears that I trust, and that happen to be attached to my body -- in a way that makes sense to the vast musical experience I have. "How can this be more beautiful?" "How can this be more secure?" "How can I say a thing to the student that clicks in her/his mind, such that they figure out for themselves how to make this more beautiful/secure/free/awesome/spine-tingling. Read More

From there we move on: Beginner students will work on basic fundamentals. Advanced students will work on the chosen piano piece. Afterwards will discuss what next lesson's goal will be. In order for students to achieve their goals, both long-term and short-term, it is expected of them to practice at least 30 minutes a day. For beginner students who are children, I would like them to work up to 30 minutes. I would suggest starting with 10 - 15 minutes of practice time everyday. Read More

You can compare it to trying to learn algebra before addition or how to square root before subtraction, you will become frustrated because the concepts are progressive and you don't have a grasp of the basics yet. Frustration is not my teaching goal for my students. My ultimate goal is to provide my students an engaging and fun way to build the musical tool belt they need to play whatever kind of music they like -- independently. Read More

My approach to coaching students is focused on 5 important areas; embouchure, tone quality, intonation (pitch), technique, and time. Memorization of key signatures and scales are very important to the student's overall success. I utilize a method for memorizing key signatures which will decrease the memorization time and increaseretention. The choice of music books and etude studies are based upon the student's level of playing and areas I identify needing improvement. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Music

I believe that an understanding of music theory and learning to read music is the foundation of success for both my piano and voice students which is why I typically require my voice students to be taking piano simultaneously with voice. For beginning piano students, I will typically begin with the James Bastien Primer/Level 1 Series with the focus split equally between theory and technique. I require students to fill out a practice log monthly to ensure that they are maintaining the knowledge and skills they learn in lessons and so that parents can be involved in their progress. I am a recent graduate of Kansas State Unviersity's vocal music program and am incredibly excited the share my love of music with you! Throughout college, I had the opportunity to perform with many different groups in many different styles. I performed with two different 9 member vocal jazz ensembles singing jazz standards, latin, samba and bebop charts. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
