With regard to teaching, I have experience in one-on-one and group settings in my home and at Bach to Rock music school. My instruction for a beginner student is for them to learn the fundamentals of identifying what the piano keys are called, how to identify the notes on the piano sheet music, placement of fingers and that each finger is assigned a number, the aspects involving music theory, i.e. different names of notes, the grand staff, scale development, key signatures and time signatures, etc., and perhaps learning the fundamentals of music composition. I will almost always start lessons with beginners who are children with the Alfred method books. These are a very straight forward 3 book set that takes kids from knowing almost nothing technical about music to being able to play and read quite complex arrangements. Once we get our feet planted in this area I will expand into using chord charts and other materials to supplement. Once that is begun we usually start to make up a list of songs that the student may be interested in learning so I can build up the vocabulary to achieve at least a simple arrangement of those songs.
