I started teaching voice while at Purchase College and then focused on performing and writing, and came back to teaching last year. I use the techniques I've learned from my vocal teachers along the way, as long as my own ideas and perspectives on healthy, correct ways to sing your best. I believe strongly in teaching technique and basic theory in addition to singing whole pieces and performing. I would begin each lesson with a vocal warmup so that I can see where their tone is placed and if they are an alto/soprano/tenor/etc. I would ask what genres they are interested in or what types of music they like. I was taken advantage of, business wise and never truly directed or instructed on the right things to do while I was studying music in my teens and younger. It is important for both me and my student to have long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. I help them set realistic goals and acknowledge their accomplishments along the way, making them more eager to practice and learn.  I love seeing that spark when an idea clicks and the student finally understands a concept or achieves a goal.
