If a student wants to work on one specific style, be it classical, jazz, or pop oriented music, I will show them the music, materials, and methods required for mastery in that subject. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop and hone their skills! I am extremely hands on and I listen very intently during my sessions. I have a great "ear" which is my best asset. I encourage each student to progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by maintaining a stress free environment. My teaching method depends on what the student wants to learn, if they prefer to start learning songs first that is fine but I will still make sure to cover basic music principles in early lessons and incorporate them into the lessons. I need and expect my students to practice at least 15 minutes of per day, more if possible. I have a four-fold method system for teaching the flute based on tone, scales, etudes, and solo and orchestral repertoire. From the start I see the importance at learning and accomplishing the goal of learning a solo piece. Whether that is an absolutely beginning learning simple tunes, to collegiate level exam pieces. I take influence from many famous flute pedagogues including Moyse, Trevor Wye, Altes, and many others. I am a laid back instructor that knows when the setting is right to encourage the student by leading them in the right direction to achieve their specific and unique goals. Each student is different and what works for one will not always work for another. By reminding the beginning student that we are all human and even the best musicians have started as complete amateurs, they can feel more comfortable making mistakes freely, that are bound to happen without feeling self-conscious.
