Overview:
I am a music-loving performer and instructor living in Philadelphia, PA.  I have played trumpet principally for thirteen years, and I also play the drums, bass guitar, ukulele, and trombone.  Since 2010 I have been a gigging musician, performing in  venues such as The Bandshell (Central Park), World Cafe Live (Philadelphia and Wilmington), Dilworth Park, and the new FringeArts headquarters.  I have performed with The Cat's Pajamas (a children's music band) and Red 40 & The Last Groovement (a theatrical funk band).  I love performing for children and adults alike and am very grateful for  the opportunity to do both.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught private lessons since my senior year of high school, six years ago.  In addition to the study of the trumpet, I have also taken two years of private voice lessons with an accomplished opera singer and interned in the office and on the road for professional children's music band, The Cat's Pajamas.  I have a lot of experience with competitions and college auditions while also having plenty of insight into what it takes to operate a business in the music industry.  Whether I am teaching a beginner or an advanced player, the emphasis is always on making music for the joy of it!  There is a distinct difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music", but I always endeavor to fuse the two together in every lesson.
METHODS USED
The goal of my instruction always is for the student to produce a rich, beautiful tone with the minimum physical and mental effort in any musical situation he or she may encounter.  Every student is different, so all of my lessons will be tailored to fit the individual's needs based on his or her level of development.  I will assign practice material to the students from my large collection of standard repertoire for trumpet pedagogy and performance.  Lessons will also involve time for listening to examples of music and playing together either as duets or in call and response.
LESSON STYLE
I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice.  "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at.  "Making music", on the other hand, can be done by anyone at any skill level and is lots of fun.  The goal of practicing the trumpet is to become so familiar with the instrument that it becomes an extension of our body and mind, as effortless and automatic to perform as breathing or walking.  I use equal parts jargon, analogy, and humor to convey the technical and abstract concepts that help guide students toward this synchronicity of thought and sound.
