I typically start piano lessons with the Bastien Method books, but I have started using Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber, as well as Alfred's Adult Course and Hal Leonard for my adult piano students. For flute and guitar, I start with Hal Leonard's books to help get them started. For organ, I require students to have a solid background of piano skills before they start the organ. For beginning guitar students who are children and just starting on guitar, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Book 1. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, and as I get to know the student better, I will personalize their lessons, setting goals to learn specific songs or solo pieces that cater to their musical tastes and interests, which keeps them invested in their guitar practice. One of my main goals as a teacher is to get to know my student, how they best learn, and what it is they love about music. My own love for music and particular bands/genres is what gave me the drive to keep practicing, and I bring this same approach to each of my lessons. Nothing makes me more happy than to see one of my students getting excited about something they are playing--and because of this, I structure my lessons to maximize the aspects of music each student enjoys, while making sure to incorporate fundamental aspects of technique and music theory regardless of the particular music we are studying. I have been teaching music in public schools for 7 years, and private lessons for 11. I currently teach high school choir and piano at Scranton High School during the week, and have taught all ages for strings for numerous years as well. My main instrument in undergrad was violin, with a minor in piano, and I have had extensive training and teaching experience on voice, viola, cello, and bass.
