Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I like to take the first lesson to learn more about my students and see if they have any prior knowledge about reading, playing, hearing and/or practicing music. I usually guide my beginner flute, clarinet, and saxophone students to the Essential Elements book, but also include some other simple repertoire and practice techniques that will fit what they need.
