My teaching style is the same for all of my students. We all learn at our own pace, it is important as a teacher to understand this and not push the student or give too much to work on in one lesson. The students skill grow stronger at a gradual and comfortable pace. Even if it is learning one scale a week that is progress! For beginning and intermediate clarinet and saxophone students I like using the Yamaha Advantage books or the Belwin Series. I like to use these lesson books and supplement with solo and duet material. I always encourage my students to bring in material they'd like to work on, from school band music to popular tunes they are intereseted in learning. I think it is important for all aspiring musicians to collaborate with others and make sure to play along with students in our lessons. I ask my students to plan their practice time each week, as I know how busy we all are! I'm not the sort of teacher who just shows a student where to place their fingers to play a song without understanding what they're doing. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Some exercises to get into the position to play and the knowledge about the instrument. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
