Working for a local drum teacher in 2005, I started teaching private music lessons in students' homes. From there, I took up residence at a local music store where I taught guitar, ukulele, bass, harmonica, songwriting, and music theory for the next fifteen years. During the pandemic, I added teaching virtually to my repertoire and have fallen in love with it. I enjoy tailoring my lesson plans and materials for each individual student. For beginning students, a like to start with a beginning method book tailored to the student's interests. I find that learning and memorizing songs and simple repertoire is an effective way for beginning and intermediate students to advance, and that following students interest goes a long way for the learning process! I firmly believe that learning should be enjoyable, and to achieve that, I blend classical and modern music in my lessons. After all, if a student isnt having fun, Im not fulfilling my role as an instructor! My teaching philosophy extends beyond just playing notes. As a performer, I've been "1st call" guitarist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Pittsburgh Musical Theatre for many years. I've also toured the eastern half if the USA and Canada with country-rock and "top 40" circuit bands, and recently appeared locally with a Journey / Foreigner / Styx tribute band, "Any Way You Want It" and a popular Casino / club date band, "Metro." Beginner Violin/Viola/Cello/Double Bass- I typically start in a class method book like essential elements or something similar, and move out of that book into etude books with music that pairs well with them, before moving onto things that are more student chosen once they can play well enough to play things that they like. Beginner Piano- I use the Leila Fletcher books because they are set up at a good pace, and work through those, adding in music that a student wants to learn as we go. Read More
