I generally start with Hal Leonard Guitar Methods book one for beginners for basic music theory. This will teach the ins and outs of how music works and how to apply it to any music you are approaching no matter the genre. While we go through the books, we will incorporate music that the student wants to learn. We will breakdown why the music is the way it is and work up from the bottom how to play those songs. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with John Thompson's Method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
