Since graduating from Bethany College in 2010, I taught at a music studio in Wheeling, WV. Unfortunately, the studio closed down. Along with teaching there, I was giving private lessons from home and continue to do so. Teaching is something that gives me the opportunity to pass on what I've learned so far and also to instill students with the opportunity to continue a journey of lifelong learning with music. I have been teaching private lessons for the last 6 years and began teaching in the public school system in spring of 2022. This fall, I will be a long-term substitute orchestra teacher for North Allegheny School District. My education at Duquesne was entirely focused on music education. I took various courses in instrument methodology for brass, woodwind, and string instruments, and studied leading pedagogy practices from distinguished educators. I studied cello with PSO musician Adam Liu, and performed challenging works for solo cello in my studio as well as orchestral works with the full Duquesne Symphony Orchestra. Read More

I grew up in Georgia fully embracing my band nerd. I started playing the saxophone in middle school and took weekly lessons. This led me to go on to college to study music. The saxophone lends itself to play in all genres like jazz and even classical music. I bring a mix of these into the lessons I teach to help students become well versed in saxophone literature. Considering my background, most students who want to study with me expect and want a serious, structured approach. In most cases, especially with beginning level students, I recommend using a method book with clearly defined progressive assignments, eventually supplementing by applying learned skills to whatever musical styles the student is interested in. More advanced students might need an explanation of theoretical concepts and applications, or technical studies. If they plan to be long term students, we might also aim to patch up educational gaps , such as reading skill, or technical problems such as proper hand positions along the way. Read More
