When teaching classical piano, I use technique books like Hanon, Pischna for advanced beginners and intermediate. Material can range from Bach, Beethoven, Schumann etc. Contemporary methods usually from an approved song book or possibly a show tune. I started teaching in 2006 in Bulgaria and since then have had teaching assistantships at Temple and Penn State Universities where I have worked with very diverse group of students with varying experience, backgrounds and age. At Temple I have worked with beginner kids at their Community Scholars program while at Penn State I worked with more advanced non majors and undergrad performance majors. I typically start woodwind students with the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method series. I like to use the Faber Piano Adventures Series or the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course for piano instruction. In addition to the method book, I like to incorporate physical/breathing exercises, supplemental warm-ups, sight-reading, music theory worksheets, and student selected repertoire in lessons. I also encourage students to create their own compositions.
