I am a very passionate music teacher, it's really who I am. I thrive off of opening the doors of music to people new to playing an instrument and teaching them a foundation upon which to grow. I graduated from UMASS Lowell with a Bachelors in Music Performancein 2014 and have 9 years of teaching experience in and around the Boston area. I play and manage a band called Skyfoot and have for about 6 years now. Read More

I encourage students to set goals for each week and complete them. If your children want to learn the cello, I will use encouragement and play as a way to introduce music. Being a friend with them, introducing and getting to know the cello in this way is an important criterion for me. I hope everyone can learn the piano happily and enjoy the fun of playing the cello. But if there are students who want to learn piano with me in a more professional way, I will also be very happy for you to come. Read More

I adapt my methods to each student accordingly. Every person is unique and has a different taste in music. However I am strict in making sure that all my students understand the fundamentals of music. Ear Training, music theory, ability to read notation and tabs, understanding chords and voicing, how to count rhythms. I have a set list of songs I teach most of my students, as they help to develop technique and are usually well received by most students. Read More

I blend the tried-and-true poise of classical technique with holistic approaches to satisfy two purposes: 1) the traditional desire to hone skill with practice and discipline, and 2) the psychological development of the student's independent musicianship. Music without expression is only sport. While technique, exercise, rigor, and history are essential in order to develop the deepest possible understanding of music, I aim to go beyond this to shape the independent expressionism of each student. Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I have many teachers that can take credit for this, beginning with both my parents. My mother was my children'c choir director at church. Prior to that, I can remember her helping me match pitch as I would sing. My father was my junior high (middle school) band director. Needless to say, I grew up in a very musical home. I had two different piano teachers growing up. Both of them were highly educated and respected musicians and educators. My high school band directors were both excellent and inspired me greatly. In college, I had two different private studio teachers who taught me much about private instruction with techniques I use to this day.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I played trombone and piano all through my schooling and still do play both. I have found piano to be my go-to instrument when I just want to sit down and make music. I can cover all the parts as a solo artist and make music that will appeal to the room, orchestrating as I go. The piano allows you to fill out the bog sounds and emote the tender moments like no other instrument. While I feel I am pretty good at the instrument, I always feel inspired to improve in my technique and expression on the piano.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Seeing so many who I have instructed along the way continue their love and passion for music and piano is always heartening. I have composed and recorded over pieces of music on the piano, currently on 5 cd's, with a sixth cd on it's way. Playing and performing live for people who come to hear you play and seeing them buy your music and comment on it later is always heartening. Hearing people's emotional responses to music I have composed is a truly beautiful thing. I really take it to heart. Music is all about the moment.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
My first year of private teaching, I taught for a private studio in Greeley, CO. We would do lessons at students' homes, then have a "keyboard band" practice at the studio once per week. During the keyboard band time, students would play some musical pieces together and it was a unique concept. Several studios of this type were set up throughout northern Colorado, so we had an adjudicated contest pitting the studio schools against each other. Our studio school won that year.
In addition, my school choirs have won numerous awards.
I did have a middle school piano student whom I recommended to the Aspen Summer Piano Institute and was accepted. Earlier in the year, he earned a Superior rating at State Contest.
