I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. Reading to the students was a great way to connect with them. I taught and we explored important themes given the behavior and motives of certain characters. The story provided excellent ways to integrate the curriculum. We learned about economics, geography, probability, and psychology. We made geographical connections given the many places Henry Sugar visited, considered money conversions, inflation, and chance, discussed the historical times in the story, and learned some sophisticated vocabulary. I began taking on private students while still in college at Temple University in Philadelphia. Although I was pursuing a degree in performance, taking on a studio of woodwind students while completing my studies helped me realize my passion for passing along my own knowledge and experience I have gained as a musician! Since then, I have maintained a regular teaching schedule combining both in-home and studio-based lessons.
