I am a multi-woodwind instrumentalist specializing in saxophone. My training is in jazz and classical music but I have performed in a variety of different genres such as latin jazz, swing, improvisation, contemporary classical music and baroque music etc. I currently work full time as a quality control musician at D’Addario in NY. At this job I play test clarinet and saxophone reeds and mouthpieces for production approval. In addition to my job at D’Addario, I perform freelance for various musical events, and frequently sub with the Cherry Poppin Daddies on alto saxophone and clarinet. I consider myself to be very passionate, hard working, and friendly. I am here to inspire and connect with others through music.
My passion is performing music and teaching others how to do the same. Most of my performance experience is on saxophone in the jazz, rock, blues, and pop genres. However, I also have a great passion for classical music and recorded a classical album titled “Contrasts” available on all streaming platforms. I have more than 10 years of experience teaching private saxophone, flute, and clarinet lessons. I also taught 3 years as a teaching assistant and 3 years as the instructor of record for a Continuing Education course at the University of Colorado. Lastly, I founded and taught a general music course for a middle school in Denver for 1 year. I am comfortable teaching all ages and strive to create a safe and inclusive environment by delivering a joyful and rigorous curriculum.
I have taught all ages how to perform music. I have experience teaching from elementary ages through collegiate level students and beyond. I use positive reinforcement to get students motivated about practicing and I always want to put their musical interests as a top priority. I have found that if you let the student start their journey by playing genres they are familiar with, they are more likely to stick with their craft and explore more types of music. This all has to be balanced while teaching their instrument’s canon of repertoire and pedagogical materials.
My teaching style is flexible based on the individual’s needs. Some students require a firm approach whereas others are better off with a gentler one. I pride myself on my ability to connect with students and find what motivates them. My approach heavily relies on the historical pedagogy of every instrument I teach while also implementing improvisation and free play to excite and motivate. My students are strongly encouraged to attend concerts, master classes, and listen to live music as much as possible. Lastly, students are given music to prepare for studio performances that are accompanied with another live instrument such as a piano or duo with another solo instrumentalist.
