I am a fully-certified music educator of over 20 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 35 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. As skills in rudiments and basic patterns develop, I go on to materials such as Syncopation by Ted Reed (reading,coordination,technique), and Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone (technique). Music is my passion. Coming from a family of musicians, I was inspired at a young age. At 8 years old, I started playing the drums. My grandfather, who played for Tommy Dorsey, was my deepest inspiration and motivated me to dial into my interest. My approach to teaching is to make it a fun and positive learning experience that they look forward to and stay inspired. Patience, encouragement and understanding of where the student is musically are crucial. I like to emphasize the idea that nothing happens overnight, only through effective practice and repetition. Having this mindset, they will no doubt see results in no time. I always like to establish a goal for each lesson, suggest cool drum videos on Youtube and make sure the student feels like they are free to ask a lot of questions if they aren't understanding something.
