I also know that you get out of lessons what you put into them so I require that students practice at home in addition to their weekly lessons. I teach from the traditional method.  I use the String Builder as it give the student a step by step method on how to learn the notes and how to understand the notes on the page.  This method teaches you 2 ideas simultaneously.  You read music, and play at the same time.  There are many methods of teaching, and I am aware of all of them, but I am very successful with the Traditional method and the String Builder Method Book. I use the Suzuki method with all students, however, supplemental material is also used as the student ages and moves through the repertoire. As the student begins to explore their instrument and experiment with different styles, techniques, and repertoire I help guide the student along their musical journey and teach the student the necessary skills to successfully perform/play the piece. Perfection isn't necessary but a good grasp on the concepts and skills that are used across different pieces and applied to repertoire that is picked up in the future. Read More

Generally, for my beginning students, I assign a regiment of short pieces and technical etudes from a variety of method books. I find this to be an effective way to build technique while also cultivating musicality. As a student advances, I begin assigning works from the standard cello repertoire, which includes pieces such as Bach Cello Suites, concertos, and sonatas. Read More
