I've found that keeping an open mind about methods is really helpful when dealing with beginning students, young and old. I've tought from various method series including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Emily Wright's A Modern Cellist's Manual, Muller Rusch, and more. While I'm not a certifited Suzuki instructor, I do teach from the Suzuki method when students or parents request it. I am a performer and educator based in Long Beach, CA. I received my Bachelor's of Music in Cello Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory of 2021. I have been very passionate about teaching cello since I started in 2016. I have performed in several venues in Southern California as a soloist, as well as in orchestral and chamber ensembles. My style is fun, joking around, but firm and serious.  I expect that my students be prepared for every lesson, but to also have fun at the same time.  I don't want to be stogy, or boring.  So I like to see my students smiling and laughing, but learning and enjoying their instruments.  The more the undesrtand their instruments and laugh the more they will enjoy playing that will lead to more technical advances. Having the basic knowledge in music and techniques in playing are very important tools to have as a performer. I typically start with the Suzuki method for beginners and intermediates. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce a solo repertoire or other music pieces appropriate to the student’s interest. I have been teaching for the last 10 years. I taught at the East Bay Waldorf School in Berkeley, CA immediately after graduating college where I taught 5-13 year olds. I am teaching the students by wide range from beginners to most advanced. I use Suzuki method combined with traditional teaching materials and traditional teaching methods for advanced students. For younger students, I mainly use Suzuki teaching method, combined with etudes, like Alwin Schroeder's 170 Foundation Studies. Teaching all age group students with scales as well.
