I began teaching privately about ten years ago. This occurred rather organically by having conversations with people in which they expressed interest in either learning a new instrument, or expanding on their preexisting skills. Though I do have a formal music education, I did start off self-taught, learning songs from my favorite bands and artists. I notice that the students who advance the most are the ones who experience playing with other people. Possibly one of the best ways to learn music is being in a band. Music lessons should be fun and engaging. My goal is to spark my students inspiration and creativity. It is important that each student progresses at their own pace and I patiently track a students growth to ensure that they are getting the most out of their lessons. I strongly believe that a well-rounded music education helps a player to become a more confident, musical, and an emotionallyyaware musician. As such, I like to give my students small assignments focused on topics besides just performance, such as Music Theory and Aural Skills exercises.
