I began teaching privately about ten years ago. This occurred rather organically by having conversations with people in which they expressed interest in either learning a new instrument, or expanding on their preexisting skills. Though I do have a formal music education, I did start off self-taught, learning songs from my favorite bands and artists. Because of this, I use a combination of assigned songs and songs requested by the student to help build and conceptually realize their facility on their instrument, as well as basic scale and chord theory. I typically start off by assessing if the student is a beginner, intermediate or advanced. Once the student's skill level has been assessed, a lesson plan will be formulated to best fit their needs. However, for students around beginner level, there is certain mandatory curriculum I teach in order for the student to have a solid fundamental understanding both on the instrument and for music in general. We will mostly focus on technique and theory, performance, as well as more creative and abstract musical aspects. Read More

Setting realistic goals is definitely a good place to start. Also, I encourage transcribing music in small sections, and to always start slow and take deep breaths, as this will reduce the student's normal anxiety and has done wonders in my own playing as well. Using a rhythm reference like a metronome or a drum loop while practicing is also a must, at it helps develop the student's groove. Internalizing music by developing the student's ear is also a very important part of my teaching style as Is applicable in any genre (hear it before you play it!) Read More

I am passionate about introducing music to young students as well as opening new doors to more experienced players. After studying Piano Performance at Biola University I went on the road as the guitar player for the rock band Fastball. I spent the next 12 years touring and recording in bands, honing my craft as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. In addition to teaching piano and guitar I now compose for television and film out of my home studio in North Hollywood, CA. Read More
