My teaching experience dates back to my high school days. I began giving guitar lessons to some younger kids in my hometown. As my own musical ability grew, I began teaching lessons on upright and electric bass as well. In addition to one-on-one lessons I teach at a summer music camp. I lead theory and improvisation classes, as well as coach the camp's jazz ensemble. It's always the highlight of my summers! Read More

I love seeing my students become as passionate about music as I am! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. It's important for each student to have just the right amount of material to work on each week, so that they are progressing without feeling overwhelmed. I also make sure to acknowledge the work that might students put in, and encourage them to feel proud of what they accomplish. Read More

It's a rewarding feeling to be a part of their growth and witness their progress firsthand. Seeing their confidence blossom as they navigate the complexities of an instrument or explore the intricacies of music theory is truly inspiring. One of the reasons I've grown to love teaching is the opportunity it provides to connect with students on a personal level. Each student comes with their own unique musical journey and aspirations. Fun!, Fun!, Fun!.. Methodically working on what works,,, right hand development. Repetition, and uncovering blocks to learning.. Learning simple songs that take s a few days at most to master, in turn, creates confidence. Music Theory and ear training are in the later stages of education, as i feel one of the most important steps is to learn "by rote". Repetition, and timing are the two most important aspects of playing any musical instrument. Read More

Additionally, some other books that I use with my drum set students are Syncopation by Ted Reed, The Art of Bop by John Riley, The Essence of Afro-Cuban Percussion, and The Essence of Brazillian Percussion by Ed Uribe. For more advanced students, I work on trancriptions of their favorite drummers, chart reading by playing with recordings or live musicians, improvisation over musical forms, and developing indivdual exercises for each student.
