I focus on several different areas for every student, so that he/she can keep progressing in all areas of technic and musical knowledge: WARM-UPs, SCALES, MUSIC THEORY, SIGHTREADING, and PREPARED PIECES. And as all music students 'should', it's important to build a good habit of practicing with a metronome. My experience in both the civilian and military music communities has given me a very open-minded but direct approach to WHAT you should learn, and HOW FAST you should be able to progress each individual student. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with CAGED System. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance looking into different genres such as RnB, Blues, Rock, Pop, Jazz. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. 5 minutes of warm up, 25 of theory, 20 of repertoire and 5 of talking about the next class. I started teaching right after graduating from Berklee at a school where I actually took lessons during my high school years! It was such a special experience and it made be fall in love with helping people achieve their musical goals and dreams, regardless of how big or small they are. There are few things more special than when a student wants to learn a song and we work on it, lesson after lesson, in as much detail as possible and when they finally get it... that look in their eyes is priceless! I like to work based on what each student needs. I encourage the student to take his or her own interests into account on a regular basis. I also use a basic foundation to determine what the student needs to attack first, such as technique, harmony, ear trinning and scales. Of course, finger, pick, and slap styles are included. All kind of styles & genres are welcome, from the more basic to the more complex genres. Read More

I tend to use standard materials, especially for beginning players. But I will also mix in exercises and techniques tailored specifically to the students needs. It is good to learn from books, but also important to vet information that is not necessarily needed or already soundly in their techniques. Every musician is unique and they have their own way about learning and progressing. For more advanced students, learning as much repertoire as possible will be stressed. Read More
