My teaching experience started while I was in college working on my Bachelor of Music degree. I gave private lessons to fellow students at my college and also was a substitute teacher for the music school in my hometown. From working with multiple guitar teachers over the course of 10 years, I have picked up on what did and did help me when I was learning. From that, I am able to adapt my methods for the individual student. Read More

It is important to me that every student remembers that despite all the hard work and practice involved in learning an instrument, the ultimate goal is to have fun and to connect with other through music. I want to my students to feel relaxed, and unafraid to ask questions of make mistakes. I emphasize the importance of regular practice, but I also want my students to get to know themselves well, to progress at their own pace, and to really find joy in the journey that is learning to play music! Setting realistic goals is definitely a good place to start. Also, I encourage transcribing music in small sections, and to always start slow and take deep breaths, as this will reduce the student's normal anxiety and has done wonders in my own playing as well. Using a rhythm reference like a metronome or a drum loop while practicing is also a must, at it helps develop the student's groove. Internalizing music by developing the student's ear is also a very important part of my teaching style as Is applicable in any genre (hear it before you play it!) Read More

I have been teaching students in music for 5+ years now, with guitar being my primary instrument. I was initially self taught, learning mainly from the countless forums, videos, and banks of articles and knowledge that the internet had to offer, but that would only take me so far. I then decided to major in music, for which I'm still undertaking, which has taken my musicianship much higher. I use a combination of teaching styles accumulated from my own time learning to expedite my students progress, so they don't have to take as long as I did to get to their goals on their instrument. I have been teaching private performance lessons since I was 14 and later taught guitar through both of my respective colleges as a graduate assistant. Immediately upon graduating, I was hired on as an Adjunct Faculty Professor at the California Institute of the Arts to teach secondary guitar lessons. I was very proud to say that I was the youngest member of the faculty at that time and I held the position for 3 semesters before leaving to tour for a year. Read More

I like to think of my teaching styles and methods as very practical yet very encouraging and nurturing. The best way to ingrain a new concept or idea I have found is to teach someone a practical way in how to use it, usually through learning a new song or exercise which expands their horizons and outlook on things. Nothing invigorates me more than to see students get excited when they finally understand or grasp something I have taught them. Read More
