My methods are geared toward the individual. Oftentimes I might start with a methods book for a beginner, but supplement it with musical choices by the individual. In selecting these choices, I find ways to simplify the music so that the student is able to be able to play it. My method is also based on questions that the student might ask. So while we will have an approach that is organized and structured, I find that addressing seemingly unrelated musical questions, can actually be incorporated into the tasks at hand. Read More

Most of my professional experience has been with the Marine Corps Music Program for 15 years. I also grew up with private piano lessons, and continued band and show choir throughout high school. Before my career with the Marine Corps Band, I also performed professionally around northern Ohio as a keyboardist and drummer in Top 40 and Rock bands for 3 years. I have a passion for composition and producing, and also enjoy finding innovative ways to encourage and challenge my music students. Read More

Learning music as learning anything is about exploration and repetition. Once you understand something you have to be able to do it correctly a few times before moving on. This can only be achieved if there is a certain amount of practicing involved. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I usually start with technique exercises that will help develop the foundation of their playing. I do not introduce music notation usually until the fifth or sixth lesson. I believe that kids learn faster when they beginning learning by call and response or like many call imitation. By developing first the ability to listen and play by instinct a student can develop a stronger foundation in developing the beat and noticing high and low pitches. Read More

I am a musician at the heart of it all. Ever since I was a youngin' I've always had a melody or beat going in my head. I started playing guitar at age 11 and took lessons for about 6 months. After that most everything was self taught or came from experience with playing with others. I picked up drums about age 14 and am very comfortable and confident on both instruments 13+ years later.
