I usually begin with Kjoss Standard of Excellence for students who are children, or for students who are just starting out. I will start to present solo repetoire suitable for their first recital show when a student has gained an understanding of the basics. For adults, I try to understand what the student is interested in, and guide my teaching appropriately to make the lessons likeable and fun, no matter their skill level. Read More

For piano I use the Alfred series, and for violin and viola I use a combination of Essential Elements and Suzuki books. As students advance I introduce additional solo repertoire. My voice students learn from a variety of sources. I usually start with a song they know well and work from there. Students also learn a variety of warm-ups and sight-singing techniques. Read More

I love working with any person that is interested in learning. I work as a substitute teacher during the day teaching various subjects. I have ran my own school and taught music as one of the subjects at the school. I am very patient and passionate with anyone that proves to me that they are really interested in learning. In the past, I have had the opportunity to play with l professional musicians while playing in the United States Navy Band. Read More

My methods depend on the student's age, what they may have already begun in lessons with another teacher, and I also take into consideration the assessment of their learning style-choosing a method that works best for their needs. Basically you could say that I have no 'one' method. I have as many methods as I have students because every single student deserves for me to take the time to get to know them and to find out what educational practices will fit best with their learning style and personality. In addition to technique we work on music theory where the student learns to identify both the type of note it is as well as identifying the name of the note dependent on the clef and key signature of the music. As an instructor we also do a variety of reading exercises where I cover a variety of genres from classical, jazz as well as a variety of contemporary genres. Read More

Lessons are catered to each individual student. The lessons are set up to maintain a balance between fun (to keep them encouraged) and necessary exercises to build the foundations that will excel them to the next level. Such methods will include basic music understanding such as posture/finger positions, reading music, ear training, improvisation, finger-memory exercises, etc., where they will both purposefully learn techniques and unknowingly develop very important musical faculties. Instruments: Piano Flute Keyboard
I have been teaching private piano lessons for almost ten years and flute for one. I love being able to work with students of all ages :) I worked for a time as the events coordinator in a nursing home and got to use music as therapy and even teach some of the senior residents! I am currently the basket ball pep band director for UW - Mikwaukee, which puts a lot of energy and fun in the way I approach music directing and teaching. Read More

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
One of my proudest moments musically was being able to perform onstage at Carnegie Hall in New York City under conductor and composer John Rutter with my college choir! For one it gave me the opportunity to explore New York City, but also being able to perform a masterwork under the baton of the composer and seeing his thought process of how to get the sound he wanted was baffling.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
My other two instruments that I have studied over the years are piano and trombone. Piano I started playing and taking lessons for during my elementary school years, taking a hiatus from them during high school and picking them back up during college! My great grandma had a piano in her house that I would always mess around with and that habit stuck all the way to today! For trombone, the opportunity for me to start it up was presented by my high school's band teacher during my freshman year of high school. I took him up on the offer and have been playing ever since!
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I was originally going to pursue a Math Education degree before switching to Music Education, so would still be teaching most likely but a different subject.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to one day learn and perform the entirety of the Songs of Travel song cycle by Ralph Vaughan Williams. I have already learned a third of the pieces throughout my colleges career, and each piece is so nuanced and fun to perform that it makes me want to learn and sing the full scope!
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Music Education Degree for Choral and General Classrooms, meaning I am certified to teach all through K-12 in either general music topics or choir specifics. I originally was going to pursue MATH Education, but my love and passion to spread love for music outshined that path.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I have been a singer my entire life, so for me it was a natural choice! My mother and father were very musical people, as well as my siblings were always in choir or musical theater.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
A student can be at any age, but the main thing they need to have is an interest THEMSELVES to improve or experience more music. Forcing a student into lessons or ensembles when their heart really is not in it is the fastest path to burnout.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I am very fortunate to have all my teachers from my school years be very positive influences in my music journey. My elementary music teacher who I took piano lessons with, my middle and high school choir teacher who lead me through countless musicals and had faith in me to help out other members of the ensemble in sectionals, my high school band teacher who helped me bridge my choir experience into instrumental work, and so many more great educators were present and always willing to lend a helping hand.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Routine of practicing is important, but adding in working on material that brings you joy instead of the same warmups over and over again has you wanting to practice longer!
