I tailor lesson plans based on your musical background, if any, and your goals. I think of lessons as collaborative, working together to figure out what works best for you. I studied academically, and I also grew up playing in punk bands in basements, so I can offer advice and exercises from multiple perspectives. I use both approaches to music fluidly in my life and I think the way people relate to music is totally personal. Read More

I have various methods for different styles. For all students (classical and nonclassical), I will assess their abilites, skill level, and what their musical interests are. Beginning students will be given a list of hand picked lesson books and written notes based on each lesson focusing on technique, basic music theory and note reading, and learning how to play basic songs. Intermediate students will be given a list of lesson books based on their preferred playing style (Ex: Jazz-Hal Leonard Jazz Guitar). Read More

During my first meeting with a new student I ask them questions about their prior experiences, current knowledge, and musical aspirations. From there I tailor a unique learning strategy geared towards their goals, personality, and aptitude. I always try to use music that the student enjoys to spotlight the concept we are covering, and encourage the student to think about it while they listen to their favorite songs. The greatest payoff I can think of is when a student gets the immediate satisfaction that comes along with hearing an audience cheer for them after a good performance, and I do my best to curate these opportunities! Because of this platform, I am now confidentially able to fully commit to my students' success as well as keep on top of any and all professional commitments. Having taken music lessons before myself and not liking it, I have come to realize that music is only fun when one is able to learn what they want to learn. This is important to understand because often times, its the strongest factor and motivator most people have when starting to pursue music. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with CAGED System. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance looking into different genres such as RnB, Blues, Rock, Pop, Jazz. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. 5 minutes of warm up, 25 of theory, 20 of repertoire and 5 of talking about the next class. I am very flexible with my teaching methods and put together the best style matching the student's learning strengths. Furthermore, I update and change my methods if I feel the current method is becoming ineffective. I keep my lessons interactive with the student because the time is for the student to retrieve as much information as he/she can regarding their instrument and they can build a stronger week of preparation heading into the next lesson. Currently my most used methods are teaching via classical, pop & jazz, and Suzuki methods. Read More
