I believe that proficiency on any instrument begins with understanding how the different parts of the instrument work together to create an optimal sound. All of my students will have an understanding of the system in place that allows them to chase the sound they hear in their heads. Whether you're 8 or 80, you won't find success if you don't know how to operate the machinery! Moreover, I believe that a passion for the instrument fits nicely into the passion that you feel for the music you love, so I try to get an understanding of the genres and groups that my students are currently interested in. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, I cannot stress the philosophy that practicing a little each and every day is vastly more important than trying to cram it all into one day out of your week. If you are a beginner we start with the very basics such as the Hal Leonard method or something similar. I also find it very important to learn your musical tastes and goals! Read More

I began teaching lessons in college. Most of my early students were elementary-school aged and novice. There, I learned that regular practice must be encouraged to allow interest to begin to pique and passion begin to form. I firmly believe that hard work and discipline go much further than talent alone. I also firmly believe in fun! My most deeply seeded goal is for my students to develop a life-long love and practice of music! Read More

First I need to know the type of music a student likes. Then I access their level and put together a plan to make them progress by teaching them a combination of; - techniques they need to know and master - exercises to help develop those techniques - songs based on their level and music taste - theory to understand the songwriting style - songwriting exercises to develop their artist side I also recommend music and videos, talk about gear, road experience, and anything else music related a student might be interested in. I try to keep my students engaged by making games for them to play while practicing. I also like to keep my students set on a goal for a given period, I believe this motivates them to push themselves. I try to be understanding of every students circumstances, so I'm understanding if a student doesn't practice for a given week. While I would like all my students to practice, I first and foremost believe consistency is important so just keeping them on the right track is often satisfactory to me. Read More

My method for teaching is individualization. All my lessons are individualized for each student's ability level and musical interests. If need be, I use certain books to supplement my lessons and for personal at home practice. Normally I only recommend books to students that want to further their understanding and ability in sight-reading, drawing from my own experiences learning from various books and online sources. I often encourage my students to learn songs instead of just focusing on exercises and technique. Read More

I follow the interests of the student and allow that to guide the direction of our study. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. This approach yields better results than forcing a student to stick to a certain method exclusively. I encourage students to divide their practice time into practicing fundamentals and technique, songs that teach them a certain concept or technique, and songs that they would like to perform or play for fun.
