Instruments: Piano Voice

I began teaching private tutoring sessions to underclassmen while I was studying songwriting at Berklee College of Music. I tutored my friends in ear training, harmony, and performance/audition technique. I found the process came quite naturally to me because I brought the knowledge I had of teaching piano and voice to children in high school to the table. It is so gratifying to see the look on a student's face when they start to comprehend what it is you're teaching them! Read More

I have been teaching piano for 8 years, and have experience teaching children as well as adults. My youngest student was 5 and my oldest 73. My experience has taught me that it is important to be flexible depending on individual students' learning styles and needs. For example, if I have a young student and they don't know how to read music, we will play rhythm clapping games so they can understand how to read rhythm rather than trying to read rhythm and play the rhythms at the piano, simultaneously. No matter the age of the student, I believe in project-based learning: I help my them write songs, make arrangements, record albums, and prepare for recitals. For my beginning students, I typically start with either Essential Elements 2000 for strings or Sound Innovations. Both books give younger students a grasp on the fundamentals of technique. As they grow I then introduce solo repertoire by using the Suzuki Books but also like to add a fiddle book. Sometimes students gradually go either to fiddle or to classical. I try and encourage what they are more comfortable with. For adults, I try to find out what genre of music they enjoy and try to gauge their ability level with a couple playing evaluations.
