Overview:
I am a positive and dedicated musician and music teacher who has a unique background of formal classical training and experience in various other genres. I have 12 years of classical training on the violin, have taught private violin and viola lessons to more than 300 students over the course of 6 summers through the Hempfield School District, participated in the NAfME All-Eastern Orchestra, performed for a year as the bluegrass and old-time fiddler in the Joe Hillman Band (Philadelphia, PA), performed as the celtic fiddler in The Ogham Stones (Lancaster, PA) for one year, and have led my own band for 2 years as a singer, songwriter and guitar player. I have performed at the Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festivals, and my true passion is to play and share my love for music with as many people as I can. I truly believe that we all have music within. Everyone has different leanings and passions, and I see my greatest strength as helping students to discover their own personal connection to music. Whether you are looking to improve your classical technique, learn fiddle tunes, learn chords on the guitar, find your voice as a songwriter, or explore singing and vocal techniques, I hope I can be a supportive part of your journey!
EXPERIENCE
I have 12 years of classical training on the violin, 8 years of classical training on the piano, have taught private violin and viola lessons to more than 300 students over the course of 6 summers through the Hempfield School District, participated in the NAfME All-Eastern Orchestra, performed for a year as the bluegrass and old-time fiddler in the Joe Hillman Band (Philadelphia, PA), performed as the celtic fiddler in The Ogham Stones (Lancaster, PA) for one year, and have led my own band for 2 years as a singer, songwriter and guitar player. I took AP Music Theory and received a 5/5 on the exam, and have a large breadth of knowledge when it comes to American Roots Music due to participation at various Old-Time and Bluegrass Festivals. I have performed at the Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festivals, and my true passion is to play and share my love for music with as many people as I can.
METHODS USED

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Essential Element's for Strings or Beth Lavender's A Better Beginning. These books introduce the fundamental position and note reading techniques in a logical progression. After the student has grasped the fundamentals, they are welcome to bring in contemporary songs. I find that a mixture of fundamentals and fun recognizable songs keeps students both progressing technically and connected to the music.

For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For fiddling, I gauge the students' strengths and develop some exercises that will enhance their sound and overall technique. Then, we choose tunes that are interesting to the student and work through them either one or a few at a time, depending on what is a comfortable work load and also a comfortable challenge.

LESSON STYLE

My number 1 goal as an instructor is to assess the needs and goals of the student, and to assist the student in reaching these goals while fostering a fun environment. Nothing is more important than finding your own personal passion, and making sure that your pursuit of your goals remains an enjoyable process. I know that studying music takes years of dedication and steady practice, so I work hard to find songs and styles that suit the student. As students progress, I like to encourage implementing a practice routine so that music becomes consistent in their lives. During each lesson it is important to identify some of the common trouble spots, and to develop exercises and assign songs that tackle these specific areas of potential.

Everyday I would walk into the room finding Nina sitting there with a smile on her face and ready to help me grow over the summer with my viola skills. Nina encouraged me to try my best and to play each song the best I could! She’s an excellent teacher!

My 5th grade daughter Campbell had viola lessons with Nina this past summer. Campbell was always excited to go to her lesson and had nothing but good words to share about Miss. Nina. I was so impressed by her flexibility with my busy schedule, her cheery personality, and the love she shows for the music world. I would not hesitate to repeat the experience we?ve had with her.

Nina was my viola teacher for 3 summers in a row. She was my favorite viola teacher so far. I loved how she was patient and took alot of time to explain different concepts until I mastered each one. I would definitly highly recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

Nina taught summer violin lessons to my 6th and 4th grade daughters recently. My 6th grader is a fast learner and has been excelling at violin, and enjoys being challenged. Nina was able to not only challenge her, but taught her new valuable techniques to refine her skills. My 4th grader is diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, so learning the violin has been enjoyable, yet extremely challenging. Nina did an excellent job making accommodations, helping her focus during lessons, and progress at her own pace. Both my daughters are extremely sensitive, and can be hard on themselves, especially when making mistakes, but Nina ALWAYS was extremely patient, nurturing, and positively encouraged both girls to see their mistakes as stepping stones to success. They ALWAYS looked forward to their lessons with Nina, as she was so personable and made wonderful connections with them both!!!!
