I typically do a quick first lesson assessment to determine how advanced the student is and go from there. For beginning students, I usually start with recognizing note patterns. I have them listen to their favorite songs and mimic the melody back to me. This is the beginning of their basic ear training. Teaching began for me in high school when I helped lead our school's all male a cappella group. I did an arrangement here and there but mostly led warm-ups and conducted most of the performances. This carried over into my college career by conducting the various choirs across campus as well as receiving a conducting scholarship. I have been trained in various styles ranging from classical, musical theatre, pop, country, etc. I write my own songs as well, and would love to encourage and assist budding songwriters with their craft. I believe that proficiency on any instrument begins with understanding how the different parts of the instrument work together to create an optimal sound. All of my students will have an understanding of the system in place that allows them to chase the sound they hear in their heads. Whether you're 8 or 80, you won't find success if you don't know how to operate the machinery!
