I began teaching private tutoring sessions to underclassmen while I was studying songwriting at Berklee College of Music. I tutored my friends in ear training, harmony, and performance/audition technique. I found the process came quite naturally to me because I brought the knowledge I had of teaching piano and voice to children in high school to the table. It is so gratifying to see the look on a student's face when they start to comprehend what it is you're teaching them! Read More

As previously mentioned, my teaching style first and foremost revolves around finding exactly what the student wants to learn and develop. As he or she progresses, I will set attainable goals along the way for the student to reach and therefore understand that learning any instrument is attainable through practice. I have found that one of the most important things is that my students do not lose motivation and their passion for music. Read More

Nothing is more important to me than my students' personal goals and having a discussion on how we can achieve those goals. I always want to make sure my students are moving forward in their creative process, so I like to check in with them at each lesson to discuss their progress. It's definitely important to me that my students practice on their own (especially if we're having lessons once/week.) I like to have my students record themselves (using the voice memo feature on their phone or, if possible, another recording device) so they can listen back to their lessons and practice between lessons. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 4 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 4 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students with vocal training and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

Much of my training techniques come from my experience with Voice Teacher, Dr. Joseph Collins (PhD, Vocal Pedagogy), whom I studied with while living in Nashville. Dr. Collins made clear to me many secrets to developing proper vocal execution and placement that had been a mystery before. I gained much more awareness and understanding of my own voice. I have enjoyed many years of private vocal instruction while at universities (Kent State University, Belmont University) and have learned good and valuable practices from different professors. Although I may be fairly new to formal teaching, my experience working in groups and sessions has taught me an incredible amount about humility and teamwork. I believe in placing emphasis on being a well-rounded person and musician above prioritizing skill on whatever instrument my students intend to learn. Being humble only increases your chances of success, especially if your talent is backed by humility and understanding. After all, there are no business or work relationships, only relationships. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Essential Element's for Strings or Beth Lavender's A Better Beginning. These books introduce the fundamental position and note reading techniques in a logical progression. After the student has grasped the fundamentals, they are welcome to bring in contemporary songs. I find that a mixture of fundamentals and fun recognizable songs keeps students both progressing technically and connected to the music. Read More
