I first started teaching in high school, where I would help fellow students with upright bass technique and reading music notation. In college, I assisted other musicians in reading jazz charts and interpreting chord symbols. However, it was from the tutelage of my many instructors that helped me craft an effective teaching style. I try to keep my students engaged by making games for them to play while practicing. I've always found that my students who seem to have the most fun are the ones who progress the fastest, so my primary method is to approach lessons with material that students are interested in. I try to keep things fun and interesting by doing things such as incorporating a student's favorite music into a lesson. It's important for a student to practice regularly with discipline and focus. However based on my experience, nothing propels a student forward faster than the happiness and satisfaction gained from 'nailing' a new lick or figuring out a cool new trick. Read More

I've been teaching private lessons for approximately 15 years. I've worked with all ages and skill levels across many genres. I would say my speciality is working with teenagers and adults who are just starting to figure out more specific directions they want to move in, and helping them dial in their goals and musical vocabulary. I love a mixed approach using songs my students listen to, ear training to be able to play by ear more accurately/faster, practical applied theory so that students can take the concepts of songs they love and use them on their own terms, and understanding what it is to be a rhythm section instrument because everyone who makes music is responsible for rhythm. My teaching methods for all instruments are to start with the basics and slowly build the foundation of a good, overall musician. For piano, I begin with Faber Piano Adventuresand Beginning Piano for Adultsby Bastien Bastien. With vocal instruction, I prefer to begin with vocal excrsises to strengthen the voice. Once the student is ready, we will move into repertoire like the first and second book of solos (for any range) by G. Read More
