These books introduce the fundamental position and note reading techniques in a logical progression. After the student has grasped the fundamentals, they are welcome to bring in contemporary songs. I've always found that my students who seem to have the most fun are the ones who progress the fastest, so my primary method is to approach lessons with material that students are interested in. I try to keep things fun and interesting by doing things such as incorporating a student's favorite music into a lesson. It's important for a student to practice regularly with discipline and focus. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material.
