It is important that every student learns and improves at their own pace because everyone learns differently. So I break down songs and theory in to increments so that they can be more easily digested over time. I find that this method of learning is extremely helpful in the retention of the knowledge the student learns. Also not all students are interested in learning the same things so I think it is very important to find out what the student wants to learn and gain from playing music and what their expectations for themselves are. I start with students by asking them what they want to accomplish on whatever instrument we're working on, and that will change the way the lessons progress. After the basics, if they want to study classical music, contemporary, or just strengthen the basic skills they have, then we progress from there. This could mean sticking to Hal Leonard books, learning songs, diving deeply into theory, or understanding the world of improvisation. Read More

Having taught students of all ages and skill levels I create a curriculum with the student that suits their goals and the practice schedule they are able to commit too. A part of my method is working with the student to create a practice schedule and plan so they can benefit as much as possible from their practice. I like to use music that the student is interested in playing to practice fundamentals while working on the repertoire they enjoy. Read More

I'm a freelance musician, transcriptionist and composer located in Nashville. Music is constantly present in my life. I love exploring new music and exploring new avenues to be creative in music. I graduated from Belmont University in 2014. Previous to living in Nashville, I lived in Wisconsin for 18 years. While I was there I played in a symphonic metal band called Warseid. Once I moved to Nashville, I started studying jazz, classical guitar, playing country, exploring avant-garde music as well as bluegrass. Read More

I follow the interests of the student and allow that to guide the direction of our study. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. This approach yields better results than forcing a student to stick to a certain method exclusively. I encourage students to divide their practice time into practicing fundamentals and technique, songs that teach them a certain concept or technique, and songs that they would like to perform or play for fun. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Essential Element's for Strings or Beth Lavender's A Better Beginning. These books introduce the fundamental position and note reading techniques in a logical progression. After the student has grasped the fundamentals, they are welcome to bring in contemporary songs. I find that a mixture of fundamentals and fun recognizable songs keeps students both progressing technically and connected to the music. Read More
