I began teaching in 2020 during the pandemic. My experience during then was mostly through online lessons. During these lessons, I organized group sessions for students and recitals where they were able to showcase their ability. In 2021 I began lessons in person and also expanded to teaching bass as well. My former students currently are members of their youth orchestras as well as musicians in some of the local bands. For my first lesson, I ask my student to simply play something, whether it be a song he/she may have learned or something entirely impromptu. From listening to and seeing my student play, I can gauge his/her skill level in timekeeping, rhythmic phrasing, melodic phrasing, tone, musical interest, and hand technique. I am primarily a guitar player from the Hudson Valley in New York, currently living in Nashville, TN. I also play and teach bass guitar! I have worked around the world on 3 different cruise ships; namely Carnival Dream, Princess Dawn and Celebrity Millennium. I follow the interests of the student and allow that to guide the direction of our study. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. This approach yields better results than forcing a student to stick to a certain method exclusively. I encourage students to divide their practice time into practicing fundamentals and technique, songs that teach them a certain concept or technique, and songs that they would like to perform or play for fun. I'm a big believer in personal goals and achievements. I like to ask my students what they hope to accomplish from their lessons, and tailor my lesson plan to meet their goals. My biggest concern is keeping the instrument fun for the student, and not letting it feel like a chore. I feel that a student is most likely to excel when they experience joy from their instrument, so to help keep the instrument fresh, I like to provide exercises that are challenging and rewarding, in addition to the regular curriculum.
