Students are given scales, modern and classical pieces to practice. I find the combinations of these three things let most students see how diverse strings can be. I will start new students, especially young students, with folk songs, games and exercises to train the ear, sense of rhythm, and acting muscles, prepare them to be able to read and understand musical notation, and encouragement to perform in a solo capacity when possible. As students progress in skill and expertise, we will begin learning songs with notation, continue developing sight reading and aural skills, introduce more challenging repertoire and foreign languages, deepen technical vocabulary and understanding, and prepare for audition opportunities. I typically do a quick first lesson assessment to determine how advanced the student is and go from there. For beginning students, I usually start with recognizing note patterns. I have them listen to their favorite songs and mimic the melody back to me. This is the beginning of their basic ear training. It teaches them to be able to recognize specific melody patterns and allows them to learn songs by ear quicker in the future. Read More
