For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. The first lesson i assess the student's ability - whether they can play, read music, and what kind of music they like. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their level. As mentioned above, I first began teaching guitar and piano during my college years. Also, I have taught music and English as a Second Language in North Carolina Public Schools, and guitar classes in community colleges. My instruction has included beginning to advanced elements of playing the guitar and music theory as it relates to the study of guitar. Additional areas of study included: different genres of music; playing rhythms of different song styles; understanding chord diagrams & reading tablature; and developing improvisation skills by learning how chords fit in a musical key, and relative scales. I work both as a freelance musician and bass instructor. I graduated from Millikin University in 2012 with a degree in Commercial Bass Performance. After I graduated I worked with a wide range of musical groups. I have performed in showbands, latin groups,musicals, jazz quartets, neo soul groups, and have even played contrabass in guitar ensembles. This means learning to listen deeply with curiosity, intention, respect, and joy bringing the meaning of play into every aspect of learning.
