Overview:
I am an instructor who is passionate and motivated about both music and teaching. While working on a degree in Psychology at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, I also studied music theory and other musical topics. I began playing bass guitar around 1978 and have played in bands, done session work and given music lessons in Michigan and the midwest ever since. I enrolled in and intensive program for bass guitar at the Players School of music where I studied performance, music theory and received private instruction from Jeff Berlin. In June 2018, I moved to the Raleigh, NC area and hope to continue to perform and teach in this area.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to 1990, when, while homeschooling my children, I taught drums and guitar as part of their curriculum. Since then I have given lessons on a part time basis. Through my experience, I have become skillful in identifying a student's strengths, weaknesses and learning style. My focus is on challenging students at their current skill level while encouraging them and making the process of learning fun. I work with students to identify their personal goals and work with them to identify practical steps towards reaching those goals. I strongly encourage work on foundational theory concepts that are beneficial regardless of the genre of music a student is interested in. Participation in performance opportunities is also encouraged.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I typically start with materials from Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. Once a student has completed this, I begin to offer materials that are more specific to the musical genre that they have stated interest in. As a student progresses, I work to expose them to a variety of techniques with a focus on helping them to develop their own unique voice on their instrument. My hope is that, during this process, students would come to view growing in their musical gifts as an enjoyable and fulfilling process that continues throughout their life.
LESSON STYLE
I have found that the witnessing a student's development of a passion for music is a very rewarding experience. For each student to freely expressive their self through their music, it is important that they are allowed to progress at their own pace. I constantly evaluate where a student is at in their growth to ensure that material is challenging, but not frustrating. Acknowledging each success, large or small, during the learning process is important for students to feel encouraged and fulfilled at they work towards their musical goals.
