Most of my teaching experience so far has been in the concert/marching band, teaching middle school band and high school and university marching percussion ensembles, which I have been doing for the last eight years. I have also taught individual percussion lessons to high school and college students off and on throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers. I have taught drum set lessons for five years so far. My performance experience includes seven years of marching band, eleven years of concert band/wind ensemble, two years of orchestra, five years of drumming for the worship team, three years drumming with Depot Street, and one year drumming with Crimson Sunset. I don't have a concrete syllabus or lesson plan, because each student is at a different point of their musicianship. In 1999, I was certified to teach Music K-12 by the state of North Carolina after attending NC Central University. Performing all over the US has been one of the greater experiences of my life as a musician, and I've had the opportunity to play in North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kansas, Alabama, Ohio, Florida, and Connecticut. This proficiency test covers major and minor scales in all twelve keys in two octaves with proper fingering, playing a piece from memory, sight reading open score (a four-part choral work), and I have had to harmonize a melody using the three basic I, IV, V7 chords in a major key and i, iv, V7 chords in a minor key. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar For Kids. For teenage and adult students I use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition. For classical guitar students I use Aaron Shearer's Learning the Classic Guitar Volume 2. After a student has a grasp over basic technique, chords, and reading I like to split the lesson between book work (note reading) and teaching students to play songs that they enjoy. Read More
