I started teaching guitar 21 years ago when a friend of mine asked for some pointers. After working with him for a couple months, it became apparent to me that I was really enjoying sharing the techniques and tricks to more comfortable, relaxed playing. I then pursued a career in teaching music as well as several other disciplines (First Aid/CPR/AED and snowsports). I currently provide instruction to a regular roster of private clients as well as teach guitar to Veterans through the regional chapter of Guitars For Vets Of The Carolinas. Read More

I have been teaching music lessons for over 5 years. When I first started, I taught part time for people in my church. I began to realize that I love to help develop people. I work both as a freelance musician and bass instructor. I graduated from Millikin University in 2012 with a degree in Commercial Bass Performance. After I graduated I worked with a wide range of musical groups. I have performed in showbands, latin groups, musicals, jazz quartets, neo soul groups, and have even played contrabass in guitar ensembles. I would say one of the greater experiences I have had as a musician was when I made an album with the Millikin University Latin Jazz Project, which won Downbeat Magazine's 36th annual Student Music Award for the category of Undergraduate College Outstanding Performance. My goal isn't to teach music. My goal is to help my students grow to love music more, and teaching them music is just the means to that end. My one-on-one teaching style is very relaxed and personable. I get to know students as people, and let them get to know me. My teaching philosophy boils down to four words, which any of my marching band students could recite to you: "Get better, have fun." You need both for the experience to be meaningful. Read More

My methods will depend to a degree upon each individual student's musical tastes and ambitions. For example, I would put much more focus on developing picking hand foundations for a classical guitarist while the fretting hand would receive more early attention for the metal shredder. This said, there are common general goals that can be set for all guitarists as they track and improve their skills. The guitar is a physical tool, and it is learned as such: the student learns how to handle the tool, how to carry out the various uses of the tool, and how to apply the tool's uses to the art they wish to create.
