My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

Teaching has been my passion for over 15 years and I strive to help students achieve their goals no matter how small or large they may be. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere where students can be themselves while still holding them accountable for their practice. Whether it's learning to strum a few chords so you can play along with some of your favorite songs, or learning to perform classical, jazz, or rock in front of an audience, I strive to set short term and long term goals to help students reach their full potential. I've been teaching guitar for about 15 years, voice for 10, drums and harmonica for 6 and classical guitar for the last 4. Over the years I've learned that the best way to approach teaching someone an instrument is to help them learn music that they love, as well as presenting concepts about what is happening in the music so that a bit of theory and the mechanics of how it all works gets mixed in with the enjoyment of learning just the technical aspects. I have been in love with music since I was a very young child. I was studying and performing singing and piano by the time I was five. I toured as a second soprano with the North Carolina Boys Choir for almost four years starting at age nine. I began teaching myself guitar at age fourteen. I was playing semi professionally as a performing songwriter when I studied guitar under master teacher Michael Kovitz in Raleigh NC. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with materials from Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. Once a student has completed this, I begin to offer materials that are more specific to the musical genre that they have stated interest in. As a student progresses, I work to expose them to a variety of techniques with a focus on helping them to develop their own unique voice on their instrument. My hope is that, during this process, students would come to view growing in their musical gifts as an enjoyable and fulfilling process that continues throughout their life. Read More

Drawing upon my education and experiences as both performer and teacher, I strive to relate my musical background to my students' learning experiences and progress. As each student comes with his or her individual musical wants and interests, student lessons are designed to meet these needs of a particular student. I have young students of ages 5 to 14 as well as students of upper ages. According to a student's level of musicianship (beginner, advanced or in between), students are taught how to read music, music theory in relation to their progress, chords, scales and how to write/compose their own songs. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method as well as learning their favorite songs. For adults, I find out what the students are interested in, and guide my instruction accordinly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter they are beginners, songwriters, blues, jazz, classical, pop, funk, rock, fusion lovers or advanced players.
