I'm new to teaching on this level, but I do have some prior experience, most notably a paid tenure teaching a family friend for a summer. My student was very young and a novice, so I primarily utilized both formal methods for the understanding of fundamentals of music theory and technique, though I also helped her learn to play a few popular songs at her request. Letting students pursue their own personal interests in music in addition to teaching them the fundamentals is important to me, but with more experienced students I generally tend to focus more on improvisation and harmony as opposed to sightreading. I believe in tailoring music lessons to the individual students needs. This usually involves speaking with the student in the first lesson/lessons to find out what specifically they want to learn or improve. Once I've figured this out, I begin to find repertoire or create exercises that challenge this student in the respective area of focus. With younger students, I prefer to make an executive decision to begin with method books and then ease into more relevant material when the student is comfortable with their instrument. Read More

I do believe in the fundamentals of music and ultimately, no matter what you hear, learning music is not re-inventing the wheel. There is technique, reading music and understanding the basics of how the particular instrument works. I like the Essential Elements for Guitar or bass for guitarists and bassists and Alfred's Piano method books. Ted Reed's Guide to Syncopation is a good drum book. Ultimately I like to get the know the student as much as I can as soon as I can so I can help them get to what they want as soon as possible with a few laughs along the way. Read More

I started teaching private lessons in high school. I taught guitar, bass, piano, voice, and songwriting lessons at Biryukov Academy of Arts and Music for 5 years for both kids and adult beginners. I have performed, written and music directed a children's theatre tour where I taught children to sing, act, and perform in front of large crowds. I was trained classically in voice, but also have a strong passion for pop, rock, and musical theatre. Read More

I usually start by assessing my student's current level. If my student is a complete beginner, I have a tried and true method of getting them started quickly. Once the student has mastered the fundamentals, I will present additional exercises and songs to work on. For students that are already experienced players, I create a lesson plan that matches their level and their goals. Usually, I work on songs, incorporate technique and music theory exercises, and do not just learn them boringly. Read More

The way i approach sharing knowledge with students is to present materials and concepts and then set about "right-sizing" the tasks based on each student's individual needs. Anything we want to play can be broken down into its component parts and we work to gain mastery of each element. It doesn't matter how small we make the task if we are progressing! Something may seem difficult, but we find the right way of working on it and we're off and running. Read More
