Positive reinforcement is key. I never learned from the mean or the overly strict teachers. In fact those teachers pushed me in the opposite direction of wanting to pursue music professionally. By going at the pace that is comfortable to the student, and praising them at every hurdle they encounter, the progress made can be exponentially greater than if the student is rushed to prepare a piece of music they don't truly care for in the first place. I vary my teaching methods according to the level and needs of each student. Each and every lesson is tailored toward the musical goals and dreams of the students. I believe in creating engaging lessons that students will enjoy but also learn a great deal from. For beginner students, I show them some fun ways of working on their breathing techniques, then I sing short melodies to them and ask them to sing them back to me, then I let them sing a little melody to me and I sing it back to them. For older or more advanced students, I find the Guild Series to be quite effective and interesting. With these students, following their interest, we continue with sight singing, composition and improvisation. With adults, we work on what they're interested in (classical, rock, blues, gospel), but with a firm grounding in fundamentals: scales, cadences, etc. For all my students if they don't respond to one set of materials, we switch to another until we can find a good match.
